Daylight Chasers

Daylight Chasers by Rue Sparks is an exquisite short story that contemplates the idea of a day that nearly never ends and the reasons behind why one would want a day to keep going so as not to see the sunrise again.

It focuses on Isabella, a young woman who utters the phrase, ‘I wish this day would never end’. This prompts a phone call from the Daylight Chasers. A company that has the ability to organise fantastical adventures and jump time zones so that the day, they and the client, experience nearly never ends.

Keenan, the overly organised guide at Daylight Chasers, is tasked with giving Isabella the experience of a lifetime. However, almost immediately upon meeting Isabella, Keenan finds that the day is not going to go as planned. Isabella’s mood is mercurial and events seem set on derailing all the day’s plans. It slowly becomes evident to Keenan that the script that normally allows him to help cheer and excite his client isn’t going to work. In finding that Isabella is hiding something profound, Keenan himself starts to question his role.

This story is intriguing in the way it gives the initial impression of being a light, easy, breezy read to quickly take on a much deeper aspect. I found it to be extremely thought provoking as it deals with one’s mental processes when faced with the reality of loss, mortality and how people cope and come to terms with grief and one’s place in life.

Even with the subject matter being weighty this is an excellent quick read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend this short story for those who enjoy stories that make you think beyond the surface level.

You can find Daylight Chasers through Amazon and I’d also recommend you take a look at Rue’s website where you can find out more about the author themselves.

A video review of this book is also available to view on YouTube. Please take a few minutes to watch.
